Hello 2nd Graders! I miss you guys already. I hope y'all are all having a great summer so far. Mine is off to a good start. I got to visit with my brother, sister-in-law and niece this weekend. End of the Year!

Tomorrow is our last day together!  I can't believe how fast the year has gone.  I have enjoyed being your teacher this year and I will miss you over the summer.
Please write today any final comments you have.  You can tell us about your summer, your favorite thing from 1st grade, your hopes for 2nd grade, or anything else you feel like writing about.  Remember to only use initials for your name and your classmates' names!

Field Day!

Write about what you did on Field Day!  Tell about your favorite and least favorite events.  Use some adjectives to describe your day.

Best Math We've Learned

We have all learned a whole lot in math this year.  We've study graphing and fractions, geometry and money, 2 digit adding and subtracting, place value, skip counting, time, and so much more!
What do you think is the most important math concept we've learned this year?  Choose a topic and persuade your classmates that it is the most useful math skill to know.  Remember to support your choice with strong reasons and examples.

Which Celebrity Are You?

Think of a famous movie, book, or TV show character that you are most like or that you would want to be.  Write a few sentences explaining the character you picked and why you are like that person or why you want to be that person.

Rhyme Time!

Create a rhyming poem using some of this week's spelling words.  We are working on the long a sound!

Squirrels- Buy It!

The store has this really awesome desert animal book that you want to buy!  It costs $2.30. 

Your mom says you can get it if you can show her two different ways to buy it.  So, write which bills and coins you would use to buy the book.  Then write a different way to pay for it!

Bears- Buy It!

Mrs. McMahan gave 3 students money to buy ice cream for their birthdays.  She only had a 5 dollar bill though.  If each ice cream cost $0.75, how much will all 3 ice creams cost?  Is $5.00 enough to buy them all?  Will there be change?  If so, how much?

Owls- Plave Value Extension

When we first did our place value unit, we learned place value through the hundreds and we talked a little about the thousands. However, a number can get much bigger than just the thousands place. Use the place value chart below to answer the following questions about the number 63,591,024.

1.  What digit is in the thousands place?

2.  In which place is the 3?

3.  Write this number in expanded form.

4.  Write this number in word form.

Write About Your Spring Break

Welcome back to school!  I know many of you went on some exciting vacations over Spring Break.  Some of you got to visit family and play with friends.  Please leave a comment telling your classmates and me about your break.  Give details and be sure to include your favorite part!

Owls- Describe the Polygons!

This picture contains 24 polygons.  You need to pick 10 to describe.  When describing each one, you can tell its name, what type of angles it has, whether it is regular or irregular, what you know about its sides and vertices, and anything else you'd like to say about the shape.  Make sure you are clear in your descriptions and if you don't get to all 10 shapes the first day, go ahead and post what you have and make a new comment to finish later in the week.

Squirrels and Bears- Tell Me What You Know About Money!

This week starts our last math unit-money!  Tell me what you already know about money.  For example, do you know the names of all the coins and their values?  Do you know how to make a dollar?  Write as much as you already know!
Also, explain a time when you have used money to buy something.  What did you get?  How much did it cost?  What money did you pay for it with?

Remember that expanded form is when you stretch a number out by its place value parts and turn it into an addition sentence?
134 is the same as 100 + 30 + 4.

Owls- Comparing Fractions

Jake had a pack of 12 markers.  He used 1/4 of the markers to color a beach scene.  Alli also had a pack of 12 markers.  She used 6/12 of the markers to color a sunset picture.

1.  Did Jake use more markers or did Alli?  Explain how you know.
2.  Give your own example of a time you've used fractions in your real life.

Why Was 6 Afraid of 7?

This week you'll need to write your own math story problems.  It could be addition or subtraction, but it has to use the numbers 8 and 9.
Owls, you may want to try a multiplication problem!

Owls- Money!

Start by going to our class website and clicking the attachment at the top of the home page.  The powerpoint will let you learn more about money and practice making change.

Then, solve this word problem.  Leave a comment that states your answer in a complete sentence.  Feel free to explain how you solved!
